Measuring weight loss can become a tiring and sometimes self-destructive thing if taken to an obsessive level. This mum originally lost 10kg using the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge but now, she no longer uses the scales to measure her success.
“I measure my success by my fitness achievements and how awesome I look in clothes. I haven’t actually measured my weight in over a month,” Vanessa said.
Vanessa started her journey weighing 86kg and at her last check she was 79kg!
How this mum measures her weight loss
Vanessa first discovered The Healthy Mummy after her son was born in 2013. Down about the weight she had gained from her pregnancy, she was looking for something that was catered to mums.
“I felt other programmes were too intense and didn’t take into account the needs of new mums,” she said.
Vanessa lost 10kg, going from 85kg to 75kg when she fell pregnant with her second baby in 2015. It was a hard pregnancy and prior to falling pregnant she fractured a bone in her foot which put her out of action.
“This meant I piled on more weight. I tried to go back to my Healthy Mummy ways but my mind was just not in it,” she said.
Towards the end of 2016 Vanessa looked at herself in the mirror, upset that she couldn’t fit in any of her clothes and upset because the only clothes that fit were her pregnancy ones.
She says, “I took some undie photos, put them up on my local Healthy Mummy group and pledged I was going to do this and give it my all!”
All about fitness now Vanessa no longer tracks her success by the scales, preferring to measure by fitness and clothing as she says “I have no idea how much weight I have lost…and I don’t really care.”
Vanessa discovered a love of trail running and set herself some big goals that she never would have imagined possible. Running an Ultra Marathon Trail called Blackall100 is currently her major focus fitness wise and she hopes to achieve this within 6 years.
“My week comprises of a mixture of exercises which include running training, parkrun, yoga, PT sessions and strength/weight training. I find mixing it up keeps it interesting!” she says.
The busy, full time working mum starts her day at 5am (leaves for work at 6.30am) and gets home from work at 5.30pm so she find it hard to find both the time and energy to exercise BUT she says it’s so important she does it for both physical and mental health.

“What hubby and I both love is that we can put ingredients into the recipe hub and see what we can make out of them!” Vanessa said.
“My biggest advice to anyone wanting to start their journey is to understand your mindset. Understand that this is not a diet, this is a lifestyle change.
Understand that this is your journey to healthy living and that weight loss will come with that so don’t make weight loss your entire focus,” Vanessa says.
