Having a healthy gut during pregnancy can help the development of your baby

Making sure you have a healthy gut before and during pregnancy is actually really important for the development of your unborn baby.

Researchers from the University of East Anglia and the University of Cambridge found that changes in the mother’s body during pregnancy can affect the structure of the placenta and how nutrients are transported.

This has a direct impact on the growing baby.

Experts studied the gut microbes of pregnant mice. These microbes play a key role in maintaining health, combating infections, and keeping the immune system and metabolism balanced.

The study looks into how a mother’s gut health impacts her baby during pregnancy.

Studies have looked into how a healthy gut can help you with ageing, but little has been researched on how they can influence pre-birth.

Foetuses in the womb receive nutrients from the mother, and a mother’s microbiome directly impacts the baby.

“Pregnancy disorders affect around one in ten pregnant women. This is worrying as pregnancy complications can lead to health problems for the mother and her baby even after the pregnancy,” says Dr Amanda Sferruzzi-Perri, University of Cambridge.

As part of the study, germ-free mice were bred lacking in any microbes and compared to mice with a ‘normal’ microbiome. 

The foetus of the germ-free mice did not receive adequate sugar and failed to grow and develop properly.

However, when the germ-free mice had their gut biome restored, it led to the unborn baby’s growth and development returning back to normal levels.

How a mother’s gut microbiome can affect the placenta

“This study carried out in mice identifies a new player in the communication between mother, placenta and foetus, which is the maternal microbiome,” read study notes.

“Finding out how this form of communication works and how to improve it may help many women who develop pregnancy complications, as well as their developing child.”

Remarkably, it appears that adding a probiotic during pregnancy may help to boost how the placenta functions, which has positive effects on the baby’s growth in utero.

While mice and humans are very different, this study could prove an important insight into the role of a mother’s microbiome and how a baby grows.
