Wow! This mum has lost 52 kgs, but says the changes in her are more than just about the scales
Tawhai Duffy has been overweight for most of her adult life. It was not until she found The Healthy Mummy 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge that things started to really change for her and her life made a complete turnaround.
“It was the best thing I could’ve done for myself and my family,” she says.
How The Healthy Mummy changed Tawhai’s life
Through the years, Tawhai needed to make some changes to become healthier and lose the excess weight she was carrying. She would begin a weight loss program, but then as quick as she started, she would give up and the weight would simply pile back on.
Tawhai would feel even worse about herself saying, “I would then feel even worse when my clothes became too tight or my weight went up again.”
“I wanted to be able to go into a shop and know I would find something that I liked and fit not just buy what I could squeeze into,” she says.
During her second pregnancy, Tawhai gained a lot of weight.
“I didn’t know if I had the determination to lose big numbers with two little girls to look after – one with special needs, major sleep deprivation and a husband that works long hours,” she admits.
It wasn’t until Tawhai found The Healthy Mummy at 30 years old and her daughter was 2 years old, that her life changed completely and she started to see positive results in her weight loss and her outlook on life.
“As soon as I read what the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenges were, I signed up straight away.
It wasn’t some quick weight loss scheme but good nutritious food, smoothies, and exercise.
I was so excited and nervous to get started and try all the delicious recipes and also become fitter and stronger with the exercises.
I started with a Healthy Mummy Smoothie for breakfast because I would usually skip it and followed the menu for the other meals and snacks.”
Being the mum she always wanted to be
Tawhai has always struggled with her food and weight, she wanted to lose weight and gain fitness not just for herself but for her family as well.
She wanted to have the energy to be able to chase her children and play on the playground equipment without worrying about it taking her weight.
But after finding The Healthy Mummy, she lost over 52kgs following the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenges and doing extra exercise and feels so much better about herself. She is now able to find the energy to be a better role model for her children.
And with The Healthy Mummy by her side, her family has gotten into a rhythm with exercise around therapy, early intervention, hospital appointments, breastfeeding, all while coping with very little sleep!

Maintaining weight loss
Tawhai finds the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenges so easy to follow and really believes this is the reason why she has been able to shred so much weight and keep it off!
“I think the reason I have continued this time is that the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenges are so easy to follow with great variety in the meals and exercise, the meals taste fantastic so I don’t miss junk food.
Also, the meal plans are easy to customise to suit your family and budget – my daughter has multiple food allergies and issues with textures and my husband works 12hr days six days a week and it works for us.
My daughter is even slowly trying more foods and textures from what we are eating, it’s great.”
Exercise and confidence
Tawhai never used to exercise much and was very unhappy with herself. She dabbled with exercise on and off over the years, but never felt motivated enough to stick with it.
“I was morbidly obese,” she says.
Once she joined the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenges, she embarked on a major exercise program.
The first time she took the first lot of 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge exercises, she was sore for three days and there were some exercises she found very difficult to do when she was weighing in at 115kg.
“But slowly I improved. Even though they don’t take long they worked up a sweat and I felt myself getting stronger.
I also started walking as well as following the 28 Day Challenge Meal Plans. It was all a great foundation for me!
Then I started trying new things as my confidence improved and my weight went down so trying to run on and off, boot camps etc.
This year I started Pole Fitness which was way out of my comfort zone but has been so much fun and great exercise. I did a pole photoshoot on the weekend, again so out of my comfort zone but I had a blast!”

Tawhai used to get takeaway because she was so busy and tired to do anything else and she would also often skip breakfast.
“Before the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenges I regularly, after a busy day, I wouldn’t be organised and we would have a takeaway.
Now I customise the meal plan on Sunday night and do our shopping online for collection Monday morning. It saves time running around the supermarket and it also stops junk food sneaking in the trolley.
I write up the meal plan and stick it to the fridge so I know exactly what we are having each day, it makes life so much easier.”
Tawhai loves The Healthy Mummy Smoothies because they are so quick to make up when she is having one of those crazy days and running out the door.

Creamy Mango Healthy Mummy Smoothie recipe
- 2 scoops Vanilla Healthy Mummy Smoothie
- 1/2 Mango
- 1/2 Banana
- 1 cup coconut milk or preferred milk
- Place all ingredients into your blender
- Blend on high for 2-3 mins until well combined
Serves 1 at 300 calories per serve
