The Results Are In
According to a new study presented to the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, eating chocolate daily, while pregnant, has many positive effects. By lifting the mother’s mood, it aids in fetal growth, development of the placenta and overall development. It’s like a magic potion that helps you feel great while helping your unborn child to grow.
Study Subjects
The study was conducted on 129 women – between 11 and 14 weeks pregnant – over a 12-week period. The expectant mums were split in half with one group given 30 grams of low-flavanol chocolate, and the other group given high flavanol chocolate.
Focusing on pre-eclampsia, gestational hypertension, placenta weight and birth weight, the results showed prominent improvement in the mothers blood flow, before and after birth, in those women that ate the hight flavanol chocolate.
“This study indicates that chocolate could have a positive impact on placenta and foetal growth and development and that chocolate’s effects are not solely and directly due to flavanol content,” researcher Emmanuel Bujold said.
