Many mums dream of balancing their family or simply wish to try for a girl. While there’s no guaranteed way to choose your baby’s gender, some families are interested in natural methods and lifestyle changes that may influence the odds. This guide explores the science, myths, and practical tips around how to conceive a girl, with a focus on evidence-based advice and support for mums in Australia and New Zealand.

There are lots of theories out there about how you can influence the gender of your baby BEFORE and during conception.

Understanding Gender Selection

The sex of a baby is determined by the chromosomes carried by the sperm. Sperm carrying an X chromosome will result in a girl (XX), while sperm carrying a Y chromosome will result in a boy (XY). At conception, it’s a 50/50 chance, and there is currently no natural method that can guarantee the outcome.

If you’re longing for a daughter, then one of these tips MAY be able to help you conceive a daughter. Did any of these work for you? Let us know if they did…

How to conceive a girl

8 ways to help you conceive a baby girl

1. The Shettles Method

The Shettles Method is one of the most well-known gender selection theories. It suggests that timing intercourse two to four days before ovulation may favour conception of a girl. The theory is based on the idea that X chromosome (girl) sperm are hardier and survive longer in the reproductive tract, while Y chromosome (boy) sperm are faster but less resilient. However, scientific studies have not consistently supported this method, and results are mixed.

2. Forget the orgasms

Apparently, women’s orgasms move sperm closer to the cervix. And as female sperm are slower than male sperm, by not orgasming while having sex you’re giving your female sperm chance to get to the cervix and fertilise one of your eggs.

3. Timing Ovulation for a Girl

Tracking ovulation can help mums time intercourse according to the Shettles Method. Tools like ovulation predictor kits, basal body temperature charts, and cervical mucus monitoring can help identify fertile days. Remember, these methods are not fool-proof, and conception is never guaranteed.

3. Eat more oranges

Some believe that a more acidic vaginal environment may favour girl sperm, as X sperm are thought to be more resilient in acidic conditions.

Oranges are believed to alter your body’s pH levels before trying to conceive. Acidic pH levels are believed to kill male sperm.

It’s unhealthy for your body to be too acidic, but you could try consuming citrus fruits, grains, vinegar and chocolate to make your body slightly more acidic.

4. Ask your partner to skip his morning coffee

Coffee is supposed to make male sperm more active before you conceive, so if your partner ditches the coffee for a day or so beforehand, it may help his slower female sperm have a fair chance.

5. Best Positions to Conceive a Girl

The Shettles Method also suggests that shallow penetration during intercourse may deposit sperm further from the cervix, favouring girl sperm. Again, there is no robust scientific evidence to support this claim, but some couples choose to try this approach as part of their conception journey.

Deep penetration during sex is said to help conceive a boy, but it’s the opposite for a girl. What’s more, having sex in the missionary position is believed to limit the depth of penetration whereas positions such as doggy style create a deeper penetration.

6. Have a bath before sex

Male sperm is said to be adverse to heat, so having a warm bath before sex may help leave more room for female sperm to make it to the egg.

7. Time of year

It may be an old wives tale, but some women believe trying to conceive during the winter months guarantees they’ll have a daughter, and trying for a baby during the summer months, a boy.

8. Foods to Eat for a Girl Baby

A 2008 study suggested that women who consumed more calcium and magnesium, and less sodium and potassium, before conception were slightly more likely to have girls. Foods that fit this profile include:

  • Dairy products (milk, cheese, yoghurt)
  • Leafy greens (spinach, kale)
  • Nuts and seeds (almonds, sesame seeds)
  • Whole grains

It’s always best to focus on a balanced, nutrient-rich diet for overall fertility and health. Extreme dietary changes are not recommended and may not be safe.

General Lifestyle Tips

  • Maintain a healthy weight and active lifestyle
  • Avoid smoking, excessive alcohol, and recreational drugs
  • Manage stress with relaxation techniques and support from friends, family, or community groups

These habits support fertility and a healthy pregnancy, regardless of your baby’s gender.

Expert Advice for Mums

If you’re hoping for a girl, focus on your overall health and wellbeing. Tracking ovulation, maintaining a balanced diet, and staying active can support your fertility journey. Remember, every baby is a blessing, and the most important thing is a healthy pregnancy and baby.
