We all know drinking water is crucial for keeping us alive and hydrated, but can we actually lose weight by drinking more water?

The true answer to this is, it’s best to eat healthily, exercise and drink more water in moderation.

However, there is an incorrect misconception that water makes us feel bloated, described as ‘water weight’, and people mistakenly believe that upping their fluid intake will make them put on. This isn’t true.

Drinking more water helps you LOSE weight. Here’s why…

Why drinking more water helps you lose weight

Studies have shown that drinking water before each meal may increase weight loss by 2 kg over a 12-week period.

When you are dehydrated, your body can’t metabolise the fat or carbs you have consumed. What’s more, water is also essential for survival and weight loss.

What’s more, water flushes the toxins out of your system, keeps your digestive system in good shape, and can even help avoid overeating (as we often mistake thirst for hunger).

How water helps you lose weight:

  • It boosts your metabolism
  • Keeps your digestive system regularly
  • Suppresses your appetite
  • Burns fat
  • Makes exercise easier
  • Flushes out toxins

How much water should I be drinking each day?

The fact we live in a hot country should be enough for us to be making sure we are getting the fluid we need.

Our bodies are made up of approximately two-thirds water, and each day we lose some of this through processes such as sweating, breastfeeding, and urinating.

Everyone is different, and your requirements depend on your age, weight, and how active you are each day.

But as a general rule, aim for around two litres of water per day (if you can). For breastfeeding mums, you’ll need to increase this to cover the demands of milk making.

Drinks such as coffee, cola and alcohol can actually make you more dehydrated, so are best enjoyed in moderation.
