Australia and America vary in a number of ways. This is clearly the case when it comes to popular baby names. You may be surprised just how different the top 100 popular baby names are in America, compared to the favourites on our Aussie shores.
BabyCentre USA is one of the leading baby naming data websites in America (and the UK) and while their data isn’t as accurate as the Social Security Administration’s list (which comes out early next year), their data includes information from over 400,000 parents who shared their baby names with the company.
So what names topped the popularity lists over in America?
Top Ten Most Popular Baby Names USA
Girls:
- Sophia
- Emma
- Olivia
- Ava
- Mia
- Isabella
- Riley
- Aria
- Zoe
- Charlotte
The top ten baby girl names in Australia are currently Charlotte, Olivia, Amelia, Ava, Mia, Sophia, Chloe, Emily, Sophie and Grace.
Incredibly enough, the most popular baby name in Australia only makes it in the tenth position over in the United States. Some of the other names that top the charts in America don’t even make the top 20 in Australia including Aria (number 34 in Australia), Emma (number 27 in Australia) and Riley (not even on the radar).
However, some of the names, including Olivia, Mia, Ava, Zoe and Isabella, prove to be favourites in both countries .
Boys:
- Jackson
- Aiden
- Lucas
- Liam
- Noah
- Ethan
- Mason
- Caden
- Oliver
- Elijah
The top ten baby boy names in Australia are currently Oliver, William, Jack, Noah, Thomas, James, Jackson, Ethan, Lucas and Lachlan.
Of the top three reigning male names in Australia, two of these names don’t even make the top 20 list in America. Instead, Americans prefer names with the en/on ending including Jackson, Aiden, Ethan, Mason and Caden, all in the top ten.
Australians also have a soft spot for some of these names, as Noah, Oliver, Jackson and Lucas feature on both countries’ top ten lists. But some of the other American favourites are barely on the radar in Australia. These include Aiden (number 52 in Australia), Elijah (number 33 in Australia) and Caden (not ranked on the top 100 list).

We have to admit, some of these American baby names are ultra adorable. And although names like Kaylee, Eliana, Grayson and Landon may not make the Australian most popular lists, we predict they will make their way overseas in the near future.
