Carbohydrates are an essential element of a healthy, balanced diet. When consumed in a balanced meal plan, carbs give us energy, fibre and keeps blood cholesterol levels in check.
However, when trying to lose pregnancy weight or trying to lose stomach fat many people mistakenly think that they have to cut out carbohydrates completely.
A study, published in the Lancet Public Health journal, has shown that avoiding carbs and replacing them with animal based proteins and fats was associated with a GREATER risk of mortality!
While eating more plant-based proteins and fats from foods such as vegetables, legumes and nuts was linked to LOWER mortality.
So, eating carbohydrates in a moderate and balanced way is the key to maintaining and adopting a healthy meal plan and life!
The study of 15,428 people in the US found diets LOW and HIGH in carbohydrates were linked with an increase in mortality, while MODERATE consumers had the lowest risk of mortality.
Low carbohydrate dietary patterns favouring animal-derived protein and fat sources, from sources such as lamb, beef, pork, and chicken, were associated with higher mortality.
Those that favoured plant-derived protein and fat intake, from sources such as vegetables, nuts, peanut butter, and whole-grain breads, were associated with lower mortality.
If you are on a low-carb eating plan for specific reasons, exchanging those carbs for plant-based foods can make up for the lack of carbs and still keep you healthy and at less of a risk of high mortality.
“If one chooses to follow a low-carbohydrate diet, then exchanging carbohydrates for more plant-based fats and proteins might actually promote healthy ageing in the long term,” said lead researcher, Dr Sara Seidelmann.
