Aunts and uncles are just like your parents, they may even look similar… but they are WAY cooler!
In fact, parenting experts say the role of aunts and uncles should never be underestimated, as they can positively affect their niece or nephew’s life as they grow up.
Why aunts are just as important for raising young girls
It’s essential for kids to have adults, other than their parents, to look up to as they grow up.
Strong adult role models are the key to thriving in life, especially for young girls are at higher risk of developing anxiety, low self-esteem over their appearance and mental health issues.
But it’s also important for young boys to have an uncle or ‘dad-type’ figure or aunt they can go to for advice when they feel like they can’t go to their mum or dad.
“[Kids] don’t want to listen to you but they still need someone to listen to,” says Steve Biddulph author of Raising Girls and 10 Things Girls Need Most To Grow Up Strong And Free.
As children get older, it’s normal for them to stop going to their mums and dads for advice but they need someone older to guide them.
If they don’t have an aunt or uncle to go to, they may seek advice from peers, who often lack the maturity and responsibility to help guide a young girl.
However, aunts and uncles don’t have to be blood relatives. Any adult can be a positive role model in a young person’s life.
