Chels Vallance, 24, from Byford in Western Australia, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 20 and told she may never be able to conceive.

Cancer survivor told she would never conceive is now a proud mum of 2

In 2016 Chels was told she would never be able to have children as the treatment she was undergoing for cancer would affect her fertility.

Much to her joy, Chels is now a proud mum of two girls, Mackenzie, 2 years old and Lainey, 13 months old.

Chels has been following The Healthy Mummy for two years. She has lost 10-15 kilos in the past three months.

Chels shares, “I have been a bigger girl most of my life and have struggled to lose weight. In January 2016 I got down to 65 kilos and was the smallest I have been, unfortunately, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 20 and that was the reason for my weight loss.

“I had surgery to remove the 6-kilo tumour from my ovary and my left ovary and Fallopian tube. I started chemo in February 2016 and was told I won’t be able to have children as the chemo would affect my fertility. “

The diagnosis

Chels bravely shares her cancer story with The Healthy Mummy.

Throughout 2015/2016 I was in pain. I felt bloated and had a sharp pain under my rib cage. I went to the hospital many times and was told it was IBS and to take some laxatives. I returned many times to be told the same thing. In the end, I gave up.

“In January 2016 I visited my GP he asked how far along I was I told him I wasn’t pregnant. He told me something wasn’t right and that I look and feel 6 months pregnant.

“I went for an ultrasound and thought maybe I was pregnant, the scan lady looked shocked and asked another doctor to come in and see results. Unfortunately, they couldn’t tell me the results as I would need to see my doctor. I saw him that afternoon and was told I had a huge tumour that had attached to my ovary.

“I had no idea what was going on, I was distraught. I was told the hospital would call me in the next month to scan and see the outcome. I went to the hospital the next day and told them I’m not leaving without a scan or surgery. Within three hours I was being prepped for surgery. They removed my left ovary and Fallopian tube and a tumour measuring 6 kilos.

“I was told after surgery they would test to check if it was benign or malignant.

“I got a phone call telling me I had a germ cell teratoma and that I indeed had cancer and they were unsure if the other ovary was safe. I was told I could have chemo and save the ovary and stop the cancer or to take it day by day and see what happens.

“I chose to do chemo knowing that I wouldn’t be able to have children.

“I had three rounds of chemo over the space of 4 months. 5 hours a day 5 days a week.

“I was told my bloods were great after every cycle. In the end, I was in remission.”

Chels pregnancy surprise!

To her surprise, Chels, discovered she was pregnant in February 2017!

“I finished my chemo and the drugs had left my body by November 2016.

“February 2017 I was feeling sick again and was worried I may have another tumour but was told I was pregnant.

“I had an uncomplicated pregnancy which resulted in a natural birth.

“I got up to 90 kilos after I had Mackenzie and was struggling to lose weight.

“I bought The Healthy Mummy  Smoothies and started using them daily and then I fell pregnant again just 4 months later.

“I had a complicated pregnancy this time around, resulting in Cholestasis and gestational diabetes.

“I had my second baby, Lainey in 2018 at 36 weeks. She was healthy and came home the next day.”

Chels return to The Healthy Mummy

Chels has returned to The Healthy Mummy and has already said goodbye to 10 kilos over the past 3 months.

“I started using Healthy Mummy again 3 months ago and I have lost 10 kilos.

“I am down to 83 kilos my goal weight is 70 kilos to be in a healthy weight range.

“Thank you Healthy Mummy for helping me on my journey.”
