1. Too much screen time

Pretty sure we’re all guilty of this one, it’s hard not to have a scroll through Instagram or Facebook before we nod off.

However, the blue light that’s emitted by our phones, iPads and laptops affects our body’s production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Before you go to bed, try and give yourself at least two hours away from the screens and cosy up with a book by lamplight or even try some meditation instead.

2. Bedtime boozing

While that glass or two of wine before bed will help you feel sleepy at first, in the long run it isn’t helpful.

When our bodies start to metabolise the alcohol though, it stops us going into rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the deepest stage of sleep.

Water is always the best drink for health, but you can always unwind with a soothing peppermint or camomile tea.

3. Midnight munchies


Ever eaten a big, rich dinner and then laid in bed wishing you could just go to sleep?

That’s because your blood sugar levels have had a big spike. It can also lead to indigestion so getting to sleep is harder. If you’re hungry before bed time, a small snack is fine but try to avoid big meals for at least three hours before bedtime.
