While there’s no cure for type 2 diabetes, studies have shown that it is possible to reverse it in some cases.
While diet changes and weight loss may help patients hold normal blood sugar levels without medication, there’s now a new way to help put the condition into remission.
In fact, a radical new diet will now be available on the NHS in the UK to help combat the disease.
Thousands of patients to put on new liquid-only diet to help reverse diabetes type 2
Researchers at Newcastle’s University put 5,000 obese patients on a strict 800 calories a day diet, consisting of mainly soup and shakes.
They found that 9 out of 10 who stuck to the diet for 12 months were able to reverse their type 2 diabetes.
Professor Roy Taylor, of Newcastle University, said: “Through diet and persistence patients are able to lose the fat and potentially reverse their diabetes.
“The sooner this is done after diagnosis, the more likely it is remission can be achieved.”
More about diabetes type 2
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas stops producing enough insulin.
There are currently 1.7 million Australians with diabetes and every day roughly 280 Aussies develop the disease.
Around 500,000 people are believed to have diabetes but don’t know about it.
Please note: If you do suffer from diabetes, that you talk to your health care professional before you alter your diet.
