Isn’t it an AWESOME feeling when you step on the scales and see you’ve lost weight? But have you ever thought about where the weight you’ve lost has actually gone?
Researchers at the University of New South Wales have conducted a study and the result may surprise you!
Where does the weight go?
We asked our Healthy Mummy community where they think the weight they’ve lost goes. And while over half the mums we asked thought that it’s converted to energy, the correct answer is that it goes into the air around us!
And it turns out that not even the experts know! The study showed that 98 per cent of health professionals asked got the answer wrong too!
Of the fat we lose, the majority is converted into carbon dioxide and water. We breathe out the carbon dioxide and then the water gets into your circulation until you sweat or urinate it out…interesting!
For instance, if you lose 10kg of fat, nearly 9 of those kilos will come out through your lungs and the remainder turns into water. In other words, nearly all the weight we lose is exhaled.
But unfortunately, breathing out more isn’t going to help you lose weight, but more likely make you hyperventilate! The only way to produce more carbon dioxide is by getting up and moving.
