Next time you think about giving your little one a rubber duck at bath time, you may want to consider something else.
Swiss and American researchers found that four out of five of the bath toys they studied contained “potentially pathogenic bacteria” and fungus. Eww!
Is it time to ditch the rubber ducks?
The study conducted was described as one of the first in-depth scientific examinations of its kind and of the rubber ducks and other bath toys tested, they found a surprisingly high level of bacteria and fungus. In fact there were up to 75 million cells per square centimetre.
Scientists found that the low-quality polymers in the plastic materials that rubber ducks are made from foster the growth of bacteria.
This combined with bodily fluids like urine and sweat plus contaminants and even the soap in bathwater add microbes and nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. And all of that makes the perfect environment for bacteria.
While it’s important that kids are exposed to some bacteria so that they build a strong immune system, the researchers said the bacteria can also lead to eye, ear and intestinal infections, especially if kids are squirting the water into their faces.
We’d better find some new toys for bath time!
